Renewable natural gas (RNG)

Renewable natural gas (RNG), also known as biomethane or sustainable natural gas, is a biogas derived from organic matter such as landfills, wastewater, agricultural and forestry waste. It is recognized as a key form of green energy due to its production process, which reduces emissions by capturing and utilizing methane, a potent greenhouse gas, that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere.

RNG is produced through a series of refined processes, the most common being anaerobic digestion. As bacteria break down organic waste in the absence of oxygen, biogas is produced comprising mainly of methane and carbon dioxide. This raw biogas is then processed and purified to remove impurities and increase its methane content, forming RNG. Additionally, the production process can also include gasification of biomass, where organic matter is exposed to high temperatures and controlled levels of oxygen to convert it into syngas, a combination of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. In certain systems, this syngas is then processed further to create RNG.

One of the key attributes of RNG is its interchangeability with conventional natural gas. It can be used directly in the existing natural gas infrastructure for heat, electricity or as a vehicle fuel without any significant modifications. As such, RNG offers a practical and efficient way to decarbonize industries and sectors that are traditionally more challenging, including heavy duty transportation, manufacturing, and home heating.

Moreover, RNG has an important role in carbon accounting due to the fact that offsetting methane emissions can help balance carbon footprints. Once captured and processed, the potent climate-warming potential of methane can be harnessed as a renewable source of energy, replacing the use of fossil fuels and ultimately reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions. This “carbon-negative” feature of RNG exemplifies the circular green economy, where waste is seen as a resource, leading to a more sustainable energy future.

Importantly, the evolution of RNG production technologies indicates its potential for becoming an increasingly scalable and versatile solution within the transition towards renewable energy. The increased demand for sustainable energy coupled with advancements in technology, affirm RNG’s pivotal role in combating climate change and fostering a more sustainable future.
