Nonetheless, when produced and utilized properly, the environmental benefits of biogas are considerable, as the methane produced from the waste is used as an energy source rather than released into the atmosphere, reducing its impact on global climate change. This ability to harness methane that would have been otherwise released into the atmosphere also makes biogas an important tool in carbon accounting.
