Wind speed

Wind speed is a term that essentially denotes the rate at which air is moving horizontally in a given area. Understanding these parameters is critically important for optimal site selection, design, and management of wind energy projects.

Moreover, measuring and understanding wind speed also helps determine potential electricity production and economic viability of a wind power project. As the relationship between wind speed and power output is cubic, even small increases in wind speed can lead to substantial increases in power generation. Therefore, accurate wind speed measurements, ideally at hub height of the planned turbine, are crucial for forecasting the expected power output.

Within carbon accounting, wind speed measurements can also play a role. It forms part of the methodology used to calculate the amount of carbon emissions avoided by a given wind energy project. The more wind available for a turbine to harness and convert into green power, the less reliance there is on traditional, carbon-intensive, fossil fuel energy sources. In this way, wind speed becomes a critical component not just in predicting the amount of green energy that can be produced, but also in calculating the subsequent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
