Transmission

Transmission, in the context of the renewable energy industry, refers specifically to the process of conveying generated electricity from power plants to electrical substations, which are located near end users. This electricity is typically transmitted through high-voltage lines to minimize the loss of energy. It is an integral part of the electrical power grid system, linking power generation with consumption.

The process starts with the generation of energy using various renewable methods, such as solar, wind, or hydropower. Once this energy has been generated, it needs to be transported to areas where it will be consumed. This is where the transmission procedure comes in. For effective transmission, the voltage of the generated electricity is stepped up to reduce energy loss during transportation across long distances. The major challenge in renewable energy transmission lies in the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources. For instance, wind speed varies and sunlight is not available round the clock, causing fluctuations in power generation that the transmission system must cope with.

It implies that the electricity generated at different plants is distributed in a decentralized manner, ensuring stable supplies of power despite the fluctuations inherent with renewable energy sources.

Moreover, transmission is emerging as a critical area of innovation for a greener future. Smart grid technology, for instance, offers bi-directional flow of electricity and information, making it possible to integrate unstable renewable sources more flexibly. These grids are more efficient and reliable, offering opportunities to reduce transmission losses and the carbon footprint associated with energy generation and use.

Overall, transmission is not just about physically transporting energy from one place to another, but it’s also about effectively managing and stabilizing the power supply, which is especially challenging – and therefore important – in the context of renewable energy.
