Sustainable biomass is a form of energy derived from living, or recently living organic materials, that are sourced and utilized in a manner that does not deplete the environment or negatively impact global carbon balance. The full lifecycle emissions of biomass, including cultivation, harvesting, processing, transportation, and combustion, must be accounted for. These factors underline the importance of using sustainable sourcing practices, such as neglecting bioenergy crops that require heavy pesticide or fertilizer use, or that displace food crops or natural ecosystems.
