Thermal mass

Thermal mass refers to the ability of a material to absorb and store heat energy. A lot of heat energy is required to change the temperature of high density materials like concrete, bricks and tiles. These kinds of materials are therefore said to have high thermal mass. Lighter materials such as wood have low thermal mass. Heat is absorbed or released as these materials' temperature increases or decreases.

By reducing the need for additional heating or cooling energy, thermal mass can reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and the associated greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, the use of local, natural materials with high thermal mass, such as earth and stone, can also reduce the carbon footprint associated with the extraction, production, and transportation of building materials.
