In the context of renewable energy, radiant energy often refers to the energy we receive from the sun, as solar radiation. The sun emits massive amounts of radiant energy every second, a significant part of which spreads out through space and eventually reaches the earth. This solar radiation has been harnessed by humans for thousands of years, initially with simple techniques such as focusing the sun’s rays through a lens to create fire, and more recently with technologically advanced methods, most notably photovoltaics.

Photovoltaics stands as a notable example of technology designed to exploit radiant energy. In the photovoltaic process, solar cells convert sunlight directly into electricity due to the photovoltaic effect. Sunlight is composed of photons, or particles of solar energy. These photons contain various amount of energy corresponding to the different wavelengths of the solar spectrum. When photons strike a photovoltaic cell, they can be reflected or absorbed. The absorbed photons generate electricity. Thus, green energy is produced without emitting any harmful greenhouse gases.

Radiant energy from the sun is also a key driver of many natural processes on which all life on earth depends. For example, the energy that drives weather patterns across the globe is radiant energy from the sun. It is safe to say that without radiant energy, life as we know it would not exist.

In the context of carbon accounting, radiant energy is also significant because technologies that harness it, like solar power, contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions. By replacing fossil fuel energy, the carbon footprint of our energy consumption can be significantly cut down, thus serving as a crucial element in mitigating the global climate crisis. Therefore, harnessing more radiant energy through technologies like solar panels can play a significant role in achieving carbon neutrality.
