Net metering begins with the installation of a renewable energy system on a property. The system is connected to the local power grid, and special metering equipment is installed to measure both the energy consumed by the property and the energy generated by the renewable system. When the system generates more power than is being used, the surplus is fed back into the grid. As a result, the meter “runs backward,” effectively crediting the property owner’s account with the utility company.

Energy consumption and production are constantly fluctuating depending on the time of the day and the season of the year. During sunny or windy days, a renewable energy system might produce more power than the property uses, leading to a surplus. Conversely, during night-time or cloudy and calm days, the system might not generate enough power, requiring the property to draw energy from the grid. Net metering allows for this exchange of energy between the renewable system and the grid, ensuring a constant supply of power to the property.

In the context of green energy and renewable energy systems, net metering serves as an incentive for property owners to invest in technologies such as solar panels and wind turbines. Besides promoting a sustainable form of energy, this scheme also provides economic benefits. Property owners are able to reduce their electricity bills as they can balance their consumption with the energy they generate and feed back into the grid. Additionally, in some regions, utilities are required to pay property owners for the excess energy supplied to the grid, creating a new potential income source. Therefore, net metering plays a critical role in enhancing the attractiveness and affordability of renewable energy systems.
